Weekly sessions (5 hours, split over 5 different days)
Cards needed: all.
- Define context [day 1: 60 minutes]
- Define institutional goals [day 2: 60 minutes]
- Create design brief [day 3: 60 minutes]
- Two rounds of …
- Generate ideas [day 4: 25 minutes]
- Disrupt the design [day 4: 20 minutes]
- Action plan [day 5: 30 minutes]
This is the recommended plan, partly because the short sessions can fit around working patterns, and partly because it allows for time between sessions for data gathering and reflection.
Half-day workshop (4 hours)
Cards needed: all.
- Define context [15 minutes]
- Define institutional goals [15 minutes]
- Create design brief [15 minutes]
- Two rounds of …
- Generate ideas [45 minutes]
- Disrupt the design [30 minutes]
- Action plan [15 minutes]
This is the most effective plan if the activity is limited to one day and the generated ideas are to be feasible, appropriate and actionable. Two rounds of the Generate … and Disrupt … stages result in two storyboarded ideas to take forward as options into the Action plan.
Quick workshop (~2 hours)
Cards needed: all.
- Define context [15 minutes]
- Define institutional goals [15 minutes]
- Create design brief [15 minutes]
- Generate ideas [45 minutes]
- Disrupt the design [30 minutes]
- Action plan [10 minutes]
This a the minimum plan necessary for the activity to generate useful ideas. This plan relies on the team being familiar with their Assets, Audiences and Audience Capabilities, Motivations and Barriers; some research prior to the workshop may aid this. This plan is summarised in a one-page guide available here.
Variation: Ideation only
Cards needed: Ideation and Disruption.

If the team has a clear design brief, i.e. a target audience, key asset and organisational goals, then they may choose to start the VisitorBox activity at the Generate Ideas stage. To ensure that appropriate ideas are generated it is vital that the design brief is specific, as this helps to constrain the ideation process and avoid spending effort on ideas that are interesting but not relevant or feasible.
N.B. It can still be helpful to try to translate the team’s existing design brief to a representative selection of the Context, Design Brief and Institutional Goals cards.
