Activity rules

The VisitorBox activity consists of five card-playing stages:

  1. Define context
  2. Define institutional goals
  3. Create design brief
  4. Generate ideas
  5. Disrupt the design

These are concluded with a final Future plan stage.

Cheat-sheet

A one-page summary of a “quick” version of the activity can be downloaded here. This gives some example timings, the key steps in each stage, and some tips for facilitation.

Timing and resource

The activity can be conducted in various ways depending on the size of the team and the time available. Some example plans are provided here.

Facilitation support

A VisitorBox session can benefit from an experienced, dedicated facilitator. If a member of your team has experience of facilitating groupwork, e.g. for time-keeping, resolving conflict, probing for detail, they may wish to take on that role. Members of the VisitorBox project have facilitated use of the toolkit in a variety of organisations: we encourage you to contact the team to discuss the possibility of us facilitating your session.

Worksheets produced to help during some of our early workshops can be downloaded as a PDF via the button below. These can be laid out on a tabletop to indicate how cards might be laid out during a VisitorBox session, helping to provide some visual structure to the card-playing activity.
